an and Brenda Wong had the quality
product, but lacked the ideal way to get
it to market.
So rather than simply settling for an exist-
ing and often unreliable distribution frame-
work in their Jamaican homeland, they de-
cided to go ahead and create their own.
“Instead of trying to find a distribu-
tor and putting their fate in someone else’s
hands, they pretty much started a supply
chain from scratch,” said their son, Brett,
who’s since become managing director of
the Kingston-based company – Coldfield
Manufacturing – that his parents founded in
1989. He runs the business with his brother,
Jordan, who is head of sales and marketing.
“And it’s been the key to the brands be-
coming very successful since then.”
The family’s foray into business began a
generation earlier when Wong’s grandfather
started a juice-packaging operation that his
parents took over and ultimately expanded
into a sizable entity that included 26 restau-
rants, a milk/juice factory and production of
ice cream novelties.
They sold the majority of the functions
to concentrate on a fruit-flavored drink busi-
ness that was both more manageable to run,
